If you have a little bit of cash and are ready for a real adventure, use your own boat. There are beautiful routes that you can take on both the Pacific and Atlantic sides of Central America. For example, taking a trip from California down the Pacific coast all the way to Panama allows you to see amazing sites. Depending on the time of year when you go, you may be able to see whales. There are lots of little ports that you can stop at along the way to enjoy a nice resort, good restaurant, or some shopping. You will likely find replacement parts for boats in case you need to make some repairs in most port towns.
An inexpensive way to see Central America is to go by bus. There are busing companies that will take you from the north of Mexico all the way down to Panama City. This ride will be long, but it will be inexpensive. It will allow to get a feel for what these countries are really all about. You will likely get tired if you do the entire trip in one shot. Plan to stop for a couple of days in major cities. For example, if the route you take is along the Pan-American highway, you are going to stop in El Salvador. Take a couple of days to hit the beaches and enjoy some surf lessons.
